Creating a Consistent AV Experience Across a New Healthcare Facility
A large healthcare facility can have dozens of rooms that use audiovisual technology in completely different ways. A small consultation room has different needs than a boardroom. A training room has different requirements than a hospitalist conference room. The challenge is making all of those spaces feel like part of the same system.
That was a major consideration for Teer Audio Visual during the new construction of Florida Medical Clinic Orlando Health Wiregrass Ranch Hospital in Wesley Chapel, Florida. The project included a wide range of conference and collaboration spaces, along with training and specialty areas. The result is a facility where users can move between rooms without having to relearn how the technology works.
Main Goal
Orlando Health wanted technology that could support everyday meetings, medical education, employee training, presentations, hybrid communication, and emergency-related needs. At the same time, the system had to fit within the hospital's private network environment and meet the expectations that come with a large healthcare installation. That made infrastructure an important part of the design.
For the people using the rooms, the objective was much simpler. Walk in, connect, start the meeting, and communicate clearly. Users should not have to think about which microphone to turn on or which combination of buttons starts a presentation. Standardization also gives the organization a practical advantage. When similar equipment and controls are used across facilities, training becomes easier and support teams have a more familiar technology platform to work with.
What We Did
Teer Audio Visual designed a distributed AV environment that connects a variety of room types while maintaining a common approach to control, audio, video, and collaboration.
At the center of the system is a network-based AV architecture using Crestron DM-NVX. Rather than building every room around a collection of independent signal paths, AV-over-IP allows video and audio resources to move through the network infrastructure. This gives the hospital more flexibility as rooms change and additional technology is needed.
Audio was given particular attention because clear speech is essential in healthcare meetings and training. Biamp Tesira processors provide the central DSP platform. Tesira handles the routing and processing between microphones, conferencing systems, and room audio. Acoustic echo cancellation is built into the microphone input architecture, while Dante provides networked audio connectivity.
Microphone selection varied according to the room. Shure MXA710 linear array microphones provide discreet voice pickup in conference spaces, while Shure MXA920 ceiling arrays are used in the larger conference room. This approach keeps tables clear of traditional microphones and puts voice capture where it makes the most sense for the room.
Video conferencing and content sharing includes Crestron Flex systems for Microsoft Teams Rooms, Barco ClickShare collaboration technology, and AVer PTZ cameras. These systems give users several ways to join meetings, share content, and communicate with people outside the room. LG Display sizes were selected according to the space, and all conferencing needs can be controlled by Crestron Touch Panels.
What users see is relatively simple. Displays, microphones, speakers, cameras, touch panels, and collaboration tools work together without requiring complicated startup procedures. Behind that simplicity is a much larger system, built by a team that worked diligently on equipment locations, cable pathways, mounting requirements, and building codes while coordinating with other construction trades.
The Wiregrass Ranch project demonstrates why healthcare AV design needs to be approached as infrastructure rather than a collection of individual conference rooms. A standardized, network-based system gives Orlando Health a common technology foundation that can support new rooms, additional microphones and speakers, and future collaboration tools as the facility develops.
